Dragon Gate Inn

In the film Dragon Gate Inn, King Hu brings another young female actress to the screen. This time instead of Cheng Pei Pei, King Hu brought a new actress to the screen by the name of Polly Shang Kuan. Polly was already studying martial arts before King Hu casted her to play the heroine role in Dragon Gate Inn. Compared to Cheng Pei Pei’s graceful movements during the fight scenes, Polly’s movements are rather stiff and she is a bit stockier also. However, Polly’s stiffness and slight stockiness works towards her advantage because when she fights in Dragon Gate Inn, Polly looks genuinely powerful. It is also because of this look that it’s not so unbelievable that Polly’s heroine character was one of the characters that killed and or injured the most people in the film. Dragon Gate Inn is the first film that Polly appeared in and it is the film that catapulted her into being one of the top female kung fu stars during the 60s and 70s.
